Historical Context

Remembrance Day takes place on 4 May every year. At 8:00 PM, two minutes of silence are observed in memory of all war victims.

Remembrance Day has commemorated all Dutch civilians and military personnel who died in war situations and peacekeeping operations since the outbreak of World War II. The ceremony at the Dam Square in Amsterdam is the national commemoration.

At 8:00 PM, the entire Netherlands observes two minutes of silence. The King lays a wreath at the National Monument on Dam Square. Commemorative ceremonies are held at war memorials across the country. Flags fly at half-mast.
